Brussels, 17/03/2005 This ETUC note is to provide: •  correct information on what is really happening in some countries concerning longer working hours. The main conclusion to this is: ‘not much’. Aside from some isolated companies, there is no general tendency to switch to longer hours. And in those companies where longer working hours do get introduced, employers have to grant important tough concessions (for example: job guarantees);

Brussels, 03/08/2004 In a bid to secure employment, trade unions have recently agreed to increase working time in a number of company-level agreements. Although the number of such cases remains limited, and the associated measures are company-specific, there are opportunistic employer and government 'rabble rousers' throughout Europe who are abusing these arrangements to stir up public opinion in favour of a general increase in working hours."

Brussels, 30/03/2004 On 31 March, the first phase of the European Commission's consultation on the revision of the 1993 Working Time Directive comes to an end. “We call the Commission to come up with proposals that challenge outmoded forms of work organisation. We look forward to proposals that stimulate modern and sustainable solutions for business and workers”, declared John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation.

Brussels, 12/02/2004 The ETUC welcomes the fact that the European Parliament decided to call on the European Commission to revise the Working Time Directive to better protect workers against the health and safety hazards brought on by working hours.

Brussels, 30/01/2004 On the occasion of the joint ETUC - TUTB Conference on “Joint occupational Health and Safety (OSH) strategy for the Enlarged Europe” organised the 30th of January in Brussels, John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) calls for proper regulation on health and safety and points the finger at British Government for misapplying the Working Time Directive.

Brussels, 13/05/2003 In Vienna the trade unions organise on the same subject a mass demonstration after the huge success of the strike of the 6th of May. In a message addressed to the French and the Austrian member organisations, Emilio Gabaglio while expressing solidarity of the ETUC to the actions engaged, stresses that beyond national specificities the question is open throughout Europe and calls for a greater convergence of objectives in the trade-union struggle for the defence of this essential element of the European social model.
